FAIR TRADE WALES UPDATE...

Firstly a HUGE thanks to everyone who took part in Fairtrade Fortnight.  Over 5000 people directly participated in Fairtrade events, and the media coverage was fantastic; over xxx articles, yyy radio programes and zzz appearances on the TV.  Well done!

Now, I hope you've had time to catch your breath because the push to make Wales the world's first Fair Trade Country continues apace.

We've got the Global Journey hitting Wales next month, an attempt to break the world record for the largest ever picnic, Fairtrade Schools and... well take a look!

The Global Journey has seen the IFAT Fair Trade banner travelling to over 52 countries so far.  It arrives in Wales on 30th April at Bangor station.

On 1st May it's climbing Snowdon (accompanied by the Conwy Fair Trade group) and then descending on a mountain bike carried by a Commonwealth Games rider.

On the 2nd May it is storming Conwy castle, along with an army of school children, and then proceeding to Dolgellau for their inaugral Fairtrade Towns meeting, then (if it's not too tired) it will be partying at the bandstand in Aberystwyth from 5 - 8pm.

May 3rd sees our intrepid banner visiting Tropical Forest Products to see what happens to Fairtrade honey when it arrives in Wales.

May 4th and the banner will be strutting it's funky, Fair Trade stuff on the catwalk in Swansea at a Fair Trade fashion show.

And finally, on May 5th, it will be dancing it's way around St Faggan's in Cardiff with a troop of Welsh dancers.

Hopefully all these adventures will lead to some great media coverage!  If you'd like to get involved then please go to www.fairtradewales.com for more information.

The
BIG Fairtrade Picnic is happening on the weekend of 29th June - 1st July.   We need 8000 people to take part if we're to break the rec ord for the world largest picnic (that's around 400 in each county)!

The idea is that each Fairtrade Town and County group organises a picnic, somewhere prominent and eye-catching, but also that local schools, churches, employers and community groups are all encouraged to organise their own Fairtrade picnic too.  They can register to be part of the world record attempt at www.fairtradewales.com.

Watch out for your BIG Fairtrade Picnic pack, which will be arriving in your inbox soon!

Over 100 schools took part in the Fairtrade Schools event in North Wales during Fairtrade Fortnight.  The pupils and teachers all left with enormous enthusiasm, talking about what they were going to do next to tell the rest of the school why Fairtrade is important.  There were some great ideas.  (I particularly liked the suggestion of making any teacher who didn't drink Fairtrade coffee sit in a bath of Nescafe until they mended their ways!)

Any school that would like to become a Fairtrade School should go to www.fairtradewales.com and follow the links.
